Top 5 Vitamins For Hair Growth

10 Min Read

What’s the easiest way to get beautiful, abundant, super-healthy hair? Feed it from the inside out. Yes, it’s true—no matter how many pricey shampoos, conditioners and gels are in your hair care arsenal, the best way to get your hair super-healthy and growing is to nourish it from within. Hair reflects overall health, so it needs the right nutrition to stay healthy. The good news is many of the vitamins that help our bodies also work as vitamins for faster hair growth.

Want to know which vitamins are good for fast hair growth? Take a look at our list of the five most important vitamins for hair growth to see if you are missing any supplements that could be added to your diet.

The Top Hair Growth Vitamins

Vitamin C

Vitamin C,  a.k.a. ascorbic acid is great for your body and your hair, so it’s a key vitamin to make hair grow faster. And, Vitamin C is responsible for the synthesis of collagen in the body, so it not only keeps skin young and flexible, but it also promotes healthy hair growth and regeneration. In addition to taking Vitamin C for hair growth, this super vitamin has other health benefits. It’s an important antioxidant for preventing damage to the hair follicles from free radicals, for example. Plus, it blocks the production of DKK-1, the so-called baldness protein.

Shoot for between 45 and 400 milligrams of Vitamin C per day. You can find it in citrus fruits, blueberries, kiwi, pineapple, strawberries, spinach, winter squash, tomatoes, and many other foods—as well as in supplements.

Biotin

Biotin, also referred to as Vitamin B7 and Vitamin H, is another vitamin that makes hair grow fast—and helps with skin and nail health. Biotin breaks down the proteins we eat into amino acids, and some of them form keratin, the main structural protein in hair. Aim for between 30 and 100 micrograms of biotin per day. It can be found in meat, egg yolks, fatty nuts, soybeans, whole grains, bananas, cauliflower, and mushrooms.

Berries are a great source of Vitamin C that promotes healthy hair growth and regeneration.

Niacin

Niacin, or vitamin B3, is another vitamin for fast hair growth. Niacin converts carbohydrates into energy in our bodies and transports the energy and oxygen to the hair follicles which improves blood circulation, giving the scalp the nutrition it needs to keep hair growing.

The recommended daily amount of niacin is 16 mg per day for men and 14 mg for women. You can find it in beef, pork, turkey, tuna, eggs, mushrooms, peanuts, sunflower seeds, avocado, and green peas.

Vitamin A

Vitamin A has a lot of health benefits and is yet another vitamin that helps hair grow fast. It’s antioxidant properties fight free radicals that are present in the body and can cause hair loss. Vitamin A also repairs our hair and keeps it moisturized.  Keep in mind, however, that excessive amounts of Vitamin A can be toxic and lead to health issues—and even hair loss—which is the opposite of what we want when taking vitamins for hair growth. In most cases, people do not become deficient in vitamin A, so a supplement is unnecessary. Eating a healthy diet with enough vegetables will keep your body’s vitamin A levels healthy.

Vitamin A is found in carrots, sweet potatoes, dark leafy greens, tuna, fruits, eggs, liver, fortified milk, and cereals. The recommended daily intake amount is about 900 mcg for men and 700 mcg for women. The upper limit of vitamin A set by the Food and Nutrition Board of the National Academy of Sciences is 3000 mcg per day.

Vitamin E

Along with being one of the vitamins for hair growth, Vitamin E is also a well-known antioxidant. Most commonly used in skin products, it can also help in faster hair growth because its antioxidants fight free radicals. Vitamin E also strengthens the cell membrane of the hair follicles, making them more stable which reduces the risk of hair falling out. Vitamin E is also one of the hair growth vitamins that increases the blood flow in the body and therefore improves oxygenation. Increased levels of oxygen help to speed hair growth and aid in healing damaged hair. With its moisturizing properties and beneficial effects on our skin, Vitamin E also keeps our scalp from getting dehydrated, which is a common cause of scalp irritation and hair loss.

Vitamin E is found in sunflower oil, nuts, leafy green vegetables, avocado, asparagus, broccoli, pumpkin, sweet potatoes, tomatoes, and mango. The recommended daily intake for Vitamin E is 15 mg.

Water Soluble vs Fat Soluble Hair Growth Vitamins

Of all the vitamins for faster hair growth, both Vitamin C and B (biotin and niacin) are water soluble. That means these hair growth vitamins are not stored in the body and have to be continuously ingested through foods or vitamin supplements in order for the body to get the amount it needs. If you ingest too much of a water-soluble vitamin, the excess with being excreted, making the risk of overdose or toxicity low.

Vitamin A and E, on the other hand, are fat soluble, meaning that although they are harder to absorb, once absorbed they are stored in the body and therefore don’t need to be replenished as often.

Taking too much of one of these fat-soluble vitamins for hair growth over time, however, can lead to a potentially dangerous condition called hypervitaminosis, in which too much of a vitamin is present in the body. A well-balanced diet will not lead to toxicity, but supplementation might, so it’s important to take the correct daily dose of these vitamins for hair growth.

Supporting Healthy Hair Growth With Supplements

If you think you are deficient in any of the vitamins for hair growth, a hair supplement is a good option. A good supplement will contain many different vitamins and minerals that work together to target the potential triggers of damaged, thinning hair.
